September 1992 in “Archives of Dermatological Research” The study examined the effects of cepharanthine and minoxidil on cultured cells from the murine hair apparatus, focusing on cell proliferation, differentiation, and keratinization. Both compounds stimulated cell proliferation and delayed differentiation and keratinization. By day 6, most control cells had differentiated, while cells treated with cepharanthine (71%) or minoxidil (70%) remained immature. By day 13, cell degeneration was minimal in treated cultures compared to controls. Keratinization was induced by elevated calcium in control cultures but was absent in treated cultures until day 13, when it occurred in cepharanthine (30%) and minoxidil (48%) cultures. The results indicated that cepharanthine and minoxidil directly influenced these cellular processes.
