Neutrophils, also known as polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs), are a type of white blood cell that plays a crucial role in the body's immune response. They are the first responders to sites of infection, where they engulf and destroy pathogens through a process called phagocytosis. Neutrophils are characterized by their multi-lobed nuclei and granular cytoplasm, which contains enzymes that help break down invading microbes.
