    GlossaryPigmentary Incontinence

melanin leaks from damaged cells into surrounding tissue

Pigmentary incontinence is a condition where melanin, the pigment responsible for skin and hair color, leaks out of damaged melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) and is taken up by macrophages (a type of immune cell) in the upper dermis. This process often results in areas of skin discoloration and can be seen in various skin disorders, such as lichen planus or vitiligo.
