    GlossaryPatch Testing (patch assay)

diagnostic method to identify skin allergies to specific substances

Patch testing is a diagnostic procedure used to identify substances that cause allergic contact dermatitis. Small amounts of potential allergens are applied to patches, which are then placed on the skin, usually on the back, for 48 hours. The skin is examined for reactions at 48 hours and again at 72-96 hours to determine if an allergy is present.
