Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is a viral respiratory illness caused by the MERS coronavirus (MERS-CoV). First identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012, it can lead to severe respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath, and has a high mortality rate. The virus is believed to have originated in bats and can be transmitted to humans through contact with camels or other infected individuals.
