    flat, discolored skin spots under 1 centimeter wide

    Macules are flat, distinct, discolored areas of skin that are usually less than 1 centimeter in diameter. They can be red, brown, or white and are not raised or depressed compared to the surrounding skin. For example, freckles and flat moles are types of macules. In a clinical context, macules can be indicative of various conditions, including infections, allergic reactions, or other dermatological issues.
