    GlossaryPlasmapheresis (Plasma Exchange)

removal and replacement of blood plasma to treat diseases

Plasmapheresis, also known as plasma exchange or therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE), is a medical procedure that involves removing a patient's blood, separating the plasma from the blood cells, and then returning the blood cells mixed with a replacement solution back into the patient's body. This technique is often used to treat autoimmune disorders, where harmful antibodies in the plasma are contributing to the disease.
