protein providing structural support in skin and hair follicles
Keratin 5 (KRT5) is a type of protein found in the skin and hair follicles that helps provide structural support and strength. It is particularly important in the formation of the intermediate filaments in epithelial cells, which are cells that line the surfaces and cavities of the body. Mutations in the KRT5 gene can lead to skin disorders such as epidermolysis bullosa simplex, where the skin becomes fragile and blisters easily.
