    GlossaryUlcers (Gastric Ulcers)

open sores on stomach or small intestine lining

Ulcers, often referred to as peptic ulcers, are open sores that develop on the inner lining of the stomach (gastric ulcers) or the upper part of the small intestine (duodenal ulcers). They are typically caused by an infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori or long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Symptoms can include burning stomach pain, bloating, and in severe cases, bleeding.
