Ectothrix refers to a type of fungal infection where the fungus invades the hair shaft and grows on the outside of the hair. This condition is often associated with dermatophyte infections, such as those caused by species of Trichophyton or Microsporum, and can lead to hair breakage and visible scaling on the scalp.
