small blood vessels break, causing skin discoloration from leaked blood

Bruising, also known as a contusion, occurs when small blood vessels under the skin break due to trauma, causing blood to leak into the surrounding tissues. This results in a visible discoloration that can range from blue or purple to green or yellow as the body reabsorbs the blood and the bruise heals.
