    sponge-like tissue in the penis that fills with blood

    The corpus cavernosum refers to one of two sponge-like regions of erectile tissue that run along the length of the penis. These structures fill with blood during sexual arousal, causing the penis to become erect. The plural form, corpora cavernosa, indicates both of these regions together.
