middle layer of hair responsible for strength and color

The cortex is the middle layer of a hair strand, located between the outer cuticle and the inner medulla. It is composed of long keratin filaments and is responsible for the hair's strength, color, and elasticity. The cortex contains melanin, which gives hair its color, and its structure can be altered by chemical treatments like coloring or perming.
