November 2025 in “Discover Food” This study investigates the potential of catechins-rich extract from Assam tea in mitigating hair loss, particularly in androgenic alopecia models. The extract, standardized at 0.1–10 µg/mL, demonstrated significant antioxidant activity, enhanced cellular proliferation, and reduced inflammation in human follicle dermal papilla cells. It was more effective than its active component, EGCG, and outperformed valproic acid in elongating hair shafts in an ex vivo mouse model. These findings suggest that catechins-rich tea extract and EGCG are promising natural alternatives for promoting hair growth and mitigating hair loss, offering a new generation of anti-alopecia agents.
