January 2022 in “Medical Mycology Journal” In a study analyzing the fungal microbiome of keratotic plugs from the noses of 10 healthy individuals, Malassezia restricta was identified as the predominant species, followed by Malassezia globosa. Notably, Malassezia hyphae, which were previously observed mainly in lesional sites of patients with pityriasis versicolor, were found in 5 of the 10 healthy individuals. These hyphae displayed a unique "spaghetti-and-meatballs" configuration, characterized by curved, thick-walled hyphae and spherical, thick-walled blastoconidia.
