Antimalarials are medications used to prevent and treat malaria, a disease caused by parasites transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes. These drugs work by targeting different stages of the parasite's life cycle in the human body, thereby reducing the severity of the infection or preventing it altogether. Some antimalarials, such as hydroxychloroquine, are also used off-label to treat autoimmune conditions like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis due to their anti-inflammatory properties.
