April 1989 in “Alcoholism Clinical and Experimental Research” The ethanol patch test was conducted on 311 healthy Japanese individuals, including 237 adults and 74 children, to evaluate its effectiveness as a model for identifying the aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) phenotype. The results, compared with ALDH phenotype determined by isoelectric focusing from hair root samples, showed that the ethanol patch test was a reliable indicator of the ALDH phenotype. The study discussed the potential usefulness of this test in future research.
