February 2025 in “Molecular Medicine” This study explores the molecular mechanisms of 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) in treating acne vulgaris, focusing on its effects on lipid metabolism. Using an acne-like mouse model and human sebocytes, researchers found that ALA-PDT reduces lipogenesis by upregulating OLR1, which suppresses the SREBP1-FAS axis, leading to decreased lipid accumulation. The activation of the OLR1-Wnt/β-catenin pathway was crucial for these effects, as disrupting this pathway reversed the inhibition of lipogenesis. These findings suggest that targeting OLR1 could be a promising strategy for acne treatment.
