TLDR High calcium in their diet caused zinc deficiency in the goats.
Two adult female goats exhibited symptoms of symmetrical alopecia, rough hair coats, weight loss, and general unthriftiness, leading to a suspicion of mineral deficiency or endocrine imbalance. The goats were on a diet of alfalfa, which is high in calcium and can inhibit zinc uptake. Low serum zinc levels and skin biopsies confirmed zinc deficiency, indicating that the high dietary calcium was the primary factor impeding zinc absorption.
