TLDR Topical 6% salicylic acid effectively reduced skin plaques in a patient with wooly hair and palmoplantar keratoderma.
This case report discusses a 56-year-old female patient with wooly hair, a rare hair shaft abnormality, and palmoplantar keratoderma (PPK), characterized by non-itchy, painful skin lesions on the palms and soles. The patient had abnormal scalp hair texture since childhood. Treatment with a topical application of 6% salicylic acid twice daily for 3 months resulted in a gradual reduction in the thickness and size of the plaques. Wooly hair can occur in isolation or with PPK and cardiac defects, and this case highlights the effectiveness of topical treatment in managing the condition.
