TLDR Lack of certain vitamins and minerals can increase hair loss in pregnant and breastfeeding women.
The study investigated the relationship between hair loss and the intake of certain vitamins and minerals in pregnant and breastfeeding women. It found that insufficient intake of vitamin A, iron, zinc, and the vitamin B complex (B6, folic acid, and B12) was associated with increased hair loss during pregnancy, with the highest hair fall percentages being 18.6% for vitamin A, 68.9% for iron, 8.3% for zinc, 57.2% for vitamin B6, 28.9% for folic acid, and 61.7% for vitamin B12. During lactation, hair loss continued due to ongoing deficiencies, except for folic acid, with the highest decreases being 43.3% for vitamin A, 37.4% for iron, 24.4% for zinc, 54.8% for vitamin B6, and 67.6% for vitamin B12. The study concluded that nutrient deficiencies could accelerate hair loss during these periods, and balanced nutrition is essential for healthy hair growth. There was a significant variation in hair loss during pregnancy but not during lactation.
