Impact of Vitamin D Status on Leptin and Adiponectin Levels in Children with Overweight and Obesity

This study investigated the relationship between vitamin D levels and the adipokines leptin and adiponectin in 136 adolescents with overweight and obesity compared to 60 with normal weight. Results showed a negative correlation between blood levels of 25(OH)D and leptin (r=-0.498, p<0.001) and a positive correlation with adiponectin (r=0.592, p<0.001) in overweight and obese adolescents. Vitamin D deficiency in these adolescents was associated with significant correlations between leptin and various anthropometric measures, while adiponectin showed negative correlations with the same measures. The levels of these adipokines significantly impact metabolic exchange criteria in adolescents with excess weight and vitamin D deficiency.
