TLDR Povidone-iodine nail solution effectively treats nail infections caused by chemotherapy.
The document reports on a study where a povidone-iodine (PVP-I) nail solution was used to treat chemotherapy-associated paronychia. The study involved 11 patients who applied a 2% PVP-I in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution to their nails twice daily for 4-8 weeks. All 11 patients (100%) experienced improvement, with 57 out of 72 affected nails (79%) returning to baseline after 8 weeks. Additionally, all patients reported a significant decrease in pain and regained the ability to perform daily activities within 1-2 weeks of treatment. Importantly, no patients had to discontinue their chemotherapy regimens, and there were no adverse side effects leading to discontinuation of the nail solution. These preliminary results suggest that the 2% PVP-I in DMSO solution is an effective topical treatment for chemotherapy-associated paronychia, warranting further investigation in controlled clinical trials.
