TLDR Vitamin D deficiency is common in adults with muscle and bone pain, especially women.
This study, conducted on 857 patients with musculoskeletal pain, found a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, particularly among females, in Turkey. The mean serum vitamin D level was 15.3 μg/L, with 91% of patients having levels below normal limits and 44.2% experiencing severe deficiency (<10 μg/L). Secondary hyperparathyroidism was present in 17% of patients. The study highlighted the need for increased vitamin D intake and sunlight exposure, especially for at-risk populations, despite Turkey's Mediterranean climate. No significant correlation was found between vitamin D levels and age, calcium, phosphorus, ALP, and PTH levels.
