TLDR Sodium valproate is a safe and effective epilepsy drug with manageable side effects.
The review discussed the use of sodium valproate (VPA) as an antiepileptic drug since 1967, highlighting its safety and effectiveness in treating epilepsy across various age groups. VPA was noted for having fewer neurological side effects and minimal impact on cognitive function compared to other antiepileptic drugs like phenytoin and phenobarbital. Common side effects specific to VPA included weight gain, tremor, and hair loss, which could be managed by adjusting the dosage. Gastrointestinal disturbances were reduced with enteric or 'chrono' VPA tablets, and a single daily dose regimen improved patient compliance without increasing toxicity. Rare cases of fatal hepatotoxicity were reported as an idiosyncratic reaction unrelated to dosage.

The conversation also mentions skepticism about a product called Vdphlo1, which includes sodium valproate and other ingredients.
