TLDR UV light causes skin color loss in bald areas; wear a cap and use sunscreen.
The study reports on 10 patients with androgenetic alopecia who developed depigmented macules on their scalp due to UV light-induced leukoderma. The depigmented areas were limited to the areas affected by hair loss, and biopsy samples showed solar elastosis. The study suggests that this entity needs to be considered in differential diagnoses and that scalp prone to actinic damage due to baldness may cause a weakness in cutaneous redox mechanisms. The authors suggest educating older patients with bald pates about the effects of chronic sunlight exposure and advising them about the benefits of wearing a cap while outdoors and using sunscreens on a regular basis.
