TLDR Verteporfin with dermal wounding may boost hair regrowth in thinning areas but not in bald spots.
This case report explores the off-label use of verteporfin, a medication approved for neovascular macular degeneration, in combination with dermal wounding to promote hair regrowth in two male subjects with androgenetic alopecia. The study involved creating dermal incisions and injecting 25 mg of verteporfin subcutaneously, followed by a topical treatment regimen. Results showed a mean increase in hair density of 63% in traditional donor sites and 38% in thinning areas, with no regrowth in completely bald areas. This novel approach suggests potential for enhancing hair regrowth in thinning areas and strengthening donor sites for future hair transplants.
