TLDR Women with effluvium have higher levels of certain urinary steroids, possibly due to stress and increased adrenal activity.
In a study conducted on 25 women with effluvium (average age 33.3 ± 12.0 years) and compared to 16 healthy control women (average age 34.6 ± 8.4 years), researchers found significant elevations in the levels of various urinary steroid metabolites. The study suggested that these elevations indicate increased steroid secretion from the adrenal gland and that high cortisol metabolite levels may be related to stress in some patients with effluvium. The results also highlighted the importance of examining urinary steroid excretion in patients with hair loss, as it provides a broad view of hormonal changes and potential sources of alterations in steroid metabolism. The study concluded that urinary steroid metabolite analysis could offer valuable insights into the metabolic changes associated with effluvium.
