TLDR Ultrasonography improves pilomatricoma diagnosis accuracy.
The study described the ultrasonographic features of 20 pilomatricoma cases in 19 patients, with a mean age of 6.9 years. The study found that pilomatricomas typically appeared as well-defined oval masses, with 80% being heterogeneously hyperechoic and all having internal echogenic foci. A hypoechoic rim was present in 85% of cases, and Doppler flow signals were observed in 70% of cases. The study concluded that pilomatricoma should be considered when a well-defined mass with inner echogenic foci and a peripheral hypoechoic rim is found on ultrasonography, improving the diagnostic rate to 76% with this method.
