TLDR Ultrasonography improves pilomatricoma diagnosis accuracy.
The study aimed to describe the ultrasonographic features of pilomatricoma in 20 cases involving 19 patients, with the goal of improving diagnostic accuracy. The patients had an average age of 6.9 years, and the female-to-male ratio was 1.1:1. The tumors were primarily located in the neck, cheek, preauricular region, and extremities, all within the subcutaneous layer, with an average size of 13.4 mm. Ultrasonography revealed that 70% of the tumors appeared as well-defined oval masses, 80% were heterogeneously hyperechoic, and 85% had a hypoechoic rim. Doppler flow signals were detected in 70% of cases. The study concluded that ultrasonography significantly improved the preoperative diagnostic rate to 76%, compared to 33% based on clinical findings alone, suggesting that specific ultrasonographic features should prompt consideration of pilomatricoma.
