TLDR Most UK survey participants had negative side effects from botulinum toxin injections, with many not fully recovering physically, emotionally, or financially.
The largest UK survey to date on the experiences of patients post botulinum toxin injection found that 79% of the 511 respondents experienced adverse events, with anxiety being the most common. The study also revealed that 68.4% of those who experienced physical harm, injury, or illness reported not having fully recovered, while 63.5% reported not having recovered emotionally, and 61.7% reported not having recovered psychologically. Financial costs were also significant, ranging from £1,000s to over £1,000,000. The study highlighted a lack of regulation within the UK's cosmetic injectables sector and a significant under-reporting of adverse events, with the number of respondents far exceeding the 188 adverse reports officially recognized by the MHRA between 1991 and 2020. The study calls for better regulation and reporting mechanisms in the aesthetics industry.
