TLDR Type I keratin genes are closely linked to the rex locus on mouse chromosome 11, affecting hair development.
The study investigated the genetic linkage between type I keratin genes and the homeobox-2 gene complex with the rex locus on mouse chromosome 11, which is significant for hair development. Using somatic cell hybrids and linkage crosses, researchers found that several type I keratin genes, including epidermal keratin K10, were closely linked to the rex locus. The absence of crossovers between these genes and rex in 239 subjects suggested that mutations at rex and nearby loci affecting skin and hair development might involve type I keratin genes.
