Sequence Analysis and Expression of a Type I Hair Keratin Gene in Goat Skin

    January 2006
    Yin Jun, Yanjun Zhang
TLDR The goat hair keratin gene is very similar to sheep's and is strongly expressed in goat hair follicles.
The study analyzed the expression of a type I hair keratin gene in goat skin by constructing a cDNA library from adult goat skin and analyzing 392 ESTs. A full-length cDNA encoding goat hair keratin gHaⅠ was identified, showing a high sequence homology (97.8%) with sheep 8CⅠ type I mRNA. In situ hybridization with the gHa1 cRNA probe demonstrated strong expression in the cortex of both primary and secondary hair follicles.
