TLDR Type 1 diabetes may cause certain autoimmune diseases in Europeans.
The study used Mendelian randomization analysis to investigate the causal relationship between type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and autoimmune skin diseases. In European populations, T1DM was found to be a risk factor for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and multiple sclerosis (MS), but not for atopic dermatitis, vitiligo, lichen planus, hidradenitis suppurativa, alopecia areata, or systemic sclerosis. No causal relationship was observed in East Asian populations between T1DM and SLE or atopic dermatitis. The study suggests regular monitoring of immunological markers for SLE, RA, and MS in T1DM patients in Europe for preventive measures, highlighting geographical and racial differences in these associations.
