TLDR Turpentine ointment is effective and safe for treating folliculitis.
The study evaluated the efficacy and safety of a turpentine ointment for treating acute folliculitis in a trial involving 70 outpatients. The ointment, containing pine turpentine oil, larch turpentine, and eucalyptus oil, was compared to povidone iodine solution and a placebo (Vaseline) over 7 days. While both active treatments reduced follicle lesion counts, the differences were not statistically significant. However, the turpentine ointment showed significant superiority over placebo in lesion evolution, responder rate, and patient assessments. All treatments were well tolerated with similar adverse events. The study concludes that the turpentine ointment is an effective and safe treatment for folliculitis.
