TLDR Analyzing hair proteins can help identify new markers for hair health and aging.
The study on the human hair proteome used a shotgun proteomics approach to analyze hair proteins, revealing a variety of proteins, including keratin, keratin-associated proteins, and intermediate filament proteins. These proteins were linked to stress response, innate immunity, epidermis development, and the hair cycle. Significant deamidation of keratin and KAPs was observed, and hair shafts contained histones with antimicrobial activity. The findings suggested that analyzing the hair proteome could provide new biomarkers for assessing hair health, diseases, and aging.
