Trimethoprim-Induced Aseptic Meningitis

    Stephen J. Derbes
TLDR Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole can cause aseptic meningitis.
The document described a case of a 61-year-old diabetic woman with Sjogren's syndrome who experienced four episodes of aseptic meningitis linked to the use of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and one episode following the use of trimethoprim alone. Aseptic meningitis had been previously associated with anti-inflammatory drugs and certain conditions like systemic lupus erythematosus or mixed connective-tissue disease. This case highlighted the potential for trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole to induce aseptic meningitis, even in patients with underlying conditions such as Sjogren's syndrome.
