TLDR Certain medications, like trimethoprim, can cause aseptic meningitis, especially in people with autoimmune conditions.
The document reported a case of a 61-year-old diabetic woman with Sjögren's syndrome who experienced four episodes of aseptic meningitis linked to the use of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and one episode following the use of trimethoprim alone. Aseptic meningitis had been previously associated with anti-inflammatory drugs and azathioprine, particularly in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus or mixed connective-tissue disease. This case highlighted the potential for trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole to induce aseptic meningitis, even in patients without underlying chronic diseases.
