TLDR Trichoscopy is a good, quick, non-invasive way to diagnose different types of hair loss.
This cross-sectional study involved 100 patients with alopecia and investigated the effectiveness of trichoscopy as a diagnostic tool for various types of alopecia. The most common trichoscopic findings across all types of alopecia were vellus hair and yellow dots, observed in 65% of cases. The study concluded that trichoscopy is a reliable, non-invasive, and faster method of diagnosis in ambiguous cases of alopecia. In 15 difficult-to-diagnose cases, dermoscopic diagnosis was accurate in 7 cases (46.67%). However, the study had limitations, including small sample sizes and the inability to perform skin biopsies on all patients.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

They have tried many treatments over the course of two years without seeing much success, and they are considering getting a hair system as a last resort.

How diffuse unpatterned alopecia (DUPA) is not an invitation to self-diagnose oneself with aggressive AGA and that seeking a specialized dermatologist may help people experiencing hair loss. Treatment options discussed include topical clobetasol propionate, oral minoxidil, and discontinuing finasteride.

A female user has experienced severe hair shedding since stopping birth control in late 2022, diagnosed as telogen effluvium with no signs of androgenetic alopecia. Despite healthy living and optimal bloodwork, she continues to shed hair daily but also sees significant regrowth.
