TLDR Trichoscopy helps diagnose and assess the severity of two types of hair loss diseases, androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata.
In a cross-sectional study conducted from 2014 to 2015, 87 patients with androgenetic alopecia (n=57) and alopecia areata (n=30) were examined using trichoscopy, a method that magnifies the scalp and hair structure. The study found that trichoscopy was effective in differentiating between these two types of hair loss diseases. Vellus hair was observed in 70% of patients with alopecia areata and 35% of patients with androgenetic alopecia. Furthermore, as the severity of androgenetic alopecia increased, the presence of vellus hair, thickness heterogeneity, and honeycomb pigmentation also increased. The study concluded that trichoscopy is a useful tool for diagnosing and assessing the severity of androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata.
