TLDR Oral betamethasone works faster than oral tofacitinib for hair regrowth in alopecia areata.
This study compared the efficacy of oral tofacitinib and oral betamethasone mini-pulse therapy in treating moderate to severe alopecia areata in a randomized controlled trial with 100 patients. Both treatments achieved significant hair regrowth (SALT 50) within 12 weeks, but oral betamethasone showed a faster response. Trichoscopic evaluation revealed that betamethasone led to a quicker reduction in yellow dots, broken hair, black dots, and exclamatory hair compared to tofacitinib. The study highlights the potential of trichoscopy as a valuable tool for assessing therapeutic response in alopecia areata treatment.
