TLDR Nocturia cases increased, but medication use declined, suggesting under-treatment.
The study analyzed trends in the pharmacotherapy of nocturia from 2016 to 2021 using data from 508,126 adults diagnosed with nocturia. The average age of the patients was 63.2 years, with females comprising 29.9% of the population. Despite an increase in nocturia cases from 69,868 to 162,306 over the study period, the use of medications such as alpha-blockers, anticholinergics, oxybutynin, and finasteride declined. This trend suggests that nocturia may be pharmacologically undertreated in the general population. The study was supported by the Clinical Research Center of University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and the Case Western Reserve University Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative.
