TLDR Treating scalp issues in hair-pulling disorder helps hair regrow and reduces itch.
The study described trichotillomania-induced pseudofolliculitis, a condition where hair pulling leads to scalp irritation and inflammation, causing further itching and hair loss. Five patients aged 7 to 46 were treated with topical steroids, antibiotics, and antipruritic shampoos, resulting in improved hair regrowth and reduced symptoms of itch. The study highlighted the importance of addressing pseudofolliculitis to enhance the treatment outcomes for trichotillomania, suggesting that this condition is under-recognized and can perpetuate the cycle of hair pulling and itching. None of the patients required psychotropic medications.
