TLDR JAK inhibitors like tofacitinib may effectively treat alopecia in children without major side effects.
The study presents a clinical case of treating multifocal alopecia areata in a 9-year-old child using oral tofacitinib, a JAK inhibitor. Over a 6-month treatment period, the patient experienced full recovery of hair growth on the scalp, with no significant clinical or biochemical abnormalities observed during treatment or for a year after discontinuation. Additionally, there was no recurrence of hair loss 12 months post-treatment. The findings suggest that JAK inhibitors could be effective for treating alopecia in children, though further data from randomized controlled trials are needed to ensure their safe use.
