TLDR Applying minoxidil can help improve hair growth in people with hair loss caused by LIPH gene mutations.
In 2015, a study was conducted on four nonconsanguineous Japanese patients with autosomal recessive woolly hair/hypotrichosis (ARWH) caused by LIPH mutations. The patients, who used 1% or 5% topical minoxidil for 6 months to 3 years, showed hair growth after the application of the treatment. No adverse effects were reported. The LIPH gene plays a crucial role in hair growth in humans, and mutations in this gene are one cause of ARWH. The study concluded that topical minoxidil could be useful for treating congenital hypotrichosis caused by LIPH mutations. This conclusion was based on the observed improvement of hypotrichosis in five cases of ARWH due to LIPH mutations after the application of topical minoxidil.
