Topical Cyperus Rotundus Essential Oil for Treatment of Axillary Hyperpigmentation: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Active- and Placebo-Controlled Study

    Ghada Farouk Mohammed
TLDR Cyperus rotundus essential oil effectively treats underarm darkening, reduces inflammation, and slows hair growth.
The study evaluated the efficacy of Cyperus rotundus essential oil (CREO) for treating axillary hyperpigmentation compared to hydroquinone (HQ) and a placebo in a randomized, double-blind trial with 153 participants. Results showed that CREO had significantly better depigmenting effects than HQ (P < 0.001) and also demonstrated superior anti-inflammatory effects and a decrease in hair growth (P < 0.05). CREO was found to be a cost-effective and safe treatment option for axillary hyperpigmentation.
