TLDR Alopecia is not a significant predictor of thyroid disease when age and sex are considered.
In a retrospective analysis of 144 patients with alopecia conducted from September 2010 to July 2013, it was found that thyroid disease was present in 16.0% of alopecia areata patients, 25.0% of frontal fibrosing alopecia patients, and 17.1% of lichen planopilaris patients, compared to 15.1% of control patients. However, after adjusting for age and sex, alopecia was not a significant predictor of thyroid disease. Despite the rates of thyroid dysfunction in alopecia patients being higher than the general U.S. population, there were no significant differences when compared to the control group.
