TLDR Thioglycolic acid mainly affects the unordered areas in hair structure.
An X-ray diffraction study conducted on human hair treated with thioglycolic acid solution revealed that thioglycolic acid molecules were primarily located in the intrafibrillar unordered areas of the hair keratin structure. This finding led to the conclusion that the redistribution of disulfide bonds in hair predominantly occurred in these areas when exposed to thioglycolic acid.
