TLDR Physalis peruviana extract is more effective in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia in rats than finasteride and terazosine.
The study aimed to compare the therapeutic effects of Physalis peruviana extract (aguaymanto), finasteride, and terazosine on benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in Holtzman rats. An experimental design was used, with five groups: a white group (B) receiving saline, a control group (C) induced with BPH using testosterone enanthate, and three treatment groups (A, F, T) induced with BPH and treated with 150mg/kg of aguaymanto, 10mg/kg of finasteride, and 60mg/kg of terazosine, respectively, for 85 days. The study measured the prostate weight/body weight ratio (P/C), biochemical tests of PSA and C-reactive protein, and the height of the prostatic epithelium. Results showed a significant difference in the P/C ratio between the control group and the treatment groups, with group A (aguaymanto) showing a different prostatic epithelium height compared to groups C, F, and T. The conclusion was that Physalis peruviana extract has a greater therapeutic effect on BPH in rats compared to finasteride and terazosine.
