TLDR Women with hair loss have weaker hair that breaks more easily.
The study evaluated the tensile strength of scalp hair in 50 women with alopecia compared to 50 controls. It found that women with alopecia had significantly lower tensile strength in both dry and wet hair samples, indicating increased breakability. The tensile strength breaking point Fmax was lower in alopecia cases (dry: 82.36±24.13 gF, wet: 86.10±23.38 gF) compared to controls (dry: 93.66±23.08 gF, wet: 94.92±16.69 gF), with p-values of 0.02 and 0.03, respectively. However, the elasticity of hair, measured by elongation at Fmax, did not show a significant difference between the two groups.
