TLDR Hair loss after COVID-19 is common, starts sooner in severe cases, and often comes with scalp pain.
The study "Telogen Effluvium and Trichodynia in Different Severity Groups of Post COVID-19 Patients" conducted from January to December 2021, involved 52 patients who had recently recovered from COVID-19 and were experiencing Telogen Effluvium, a common form of non-scarring hair loss. The average age of the participants was 31.0577±11.78 years, with 75% being female. The study found that the average onset of hair loss after COVID-19 infection was 10.05 weeks, with it occurring significantly earlier in patients who had more severe cases of COVID-19. Additionally, 30.80% of the patients with Telogen Effluvium also experienced trichodynia, a painful sensation in the scalp. The study concluded that Telogen Effluvium is common in post-COVID patients, particularly in females, and its onset is earlier and more associated with trichodynia in patients who had more severe COVID-19.
